Transit Tokens - Transporation Tokens
Transportation token, Transit tokens or Bus Tokens are tokens made for an operator of a transportation facility. They were used with his authority on his facility. They may include tokens used on toll roads, bridges, amusement rides, ferries, streetcars and buses. They were accepted as payment for one ride, one passage, one fare, one half fare and one student fare.
The majority of these tokens are 16mm or 23mm and had three main types of buses pictured. The old bus type with the protruding front first appeared in 1924. A second type appeared in 1936. By 1952 a third type closely resembled a modern Greyhound type bus. Most regular issue transportation tokens are common and priced very low. This is a great token started collection with lots of tokens available in bulk. Plus several books or catalogs have been written on the subject.
The Most Popular transit tokens are the ones "Good for One Ride".
The American Vecturist Association (or AVA) is an organization of transportation token collectors in the United States and Canada, as well as world-wide. Members of the AVA receive the Fare Box, the monthly newsletter of the AVA. The Fare Box contains advertisements, stories, and information about various tokens, as well as resources to buy, sell, and trade tokens. AVA members are also eligible to join the New Issue Service, which mails new transportation tokens to its members for a nominal fee.
