Sacagawea Dollars 2000 to Date

The Sacagawea Dollar is the current United States dollar coin. This coin was first minted in 2000 and depicts the Native American woman Sacagawea. These coins were made to replace the disliked Susan B. Anthony dollar which were often confused with quarters because of their similar size and identical color.

To remedy this the Sacagawea Dollars was given a distinctive gold color which makes it the only currently circulating gold colored coin in the United States.

The Sacagawea dollar is still minted but dates other than 2000 or 2001 are only available in collector Uncirculated Rolls, Mint Sets, Proof Sets.

The obverse was designed by Glenna Goodacre and depicts Sacagawea, a young Native American Shoshone. On her back she carries Jean Baptiste her infant son. The coin exemplifies the spirit of Liberty, Peace and Freedom shown by Sacagawea in her conduct as an interpreter and guide to explorers Louis and Clark during their journey westward to the Pacific. Thomas D. Rogers designed the reverse side which shows an eagle in flight.

The best place to purchase Sacagawea Dollar is at eBay. Most of these coins are not that expensive in the better grades and no raritys exist. You should be able to find many nice specimens for your collection at just above face value to $5.00 for better grades such as uncirculated coins and proofs. Mixed rolls (25 coins) can be purchased for $30.00 to $40.00 and a great way to start a collection.
