1916 to 1945 Mercury Dimes

The Mercury Dime may very well be the most beautiful coin ever produced by the United States Mint. It is truly remarkable that a coin this small could have such intricate detail and pleasing design.

One thing its design does not depict, however, is Mercury, the messenger of the gods in Roman mythology. The obverse figure is a depiction of Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap. The so called Mercury Dimes contain no mercury.

The portrait on its obverse is actually that of Liberty wearing a winged cap symbolizing freedom of thought. Thus, the coin more properly is known as the Winged Head Liberty dime. But the misnomer Mercury Dime was applied to it early on and, after many years of common usage, has stuck.

The 1916-D issue of only 264,000 coins is one of the most sought after Mercury Dime. No dimes at all bear the dates of 1922, 1932, or 1933, and the next rarest date after 1916-D is 1921-D.
