United States Half Cents 1793 to 1857

The Half Cent was authorized to be minted April 2, 1792. Production of the half cent in the United States was from 1793-1857.

The half-cent piece was made of 100% copper and its weight was 104 grains. It was slightly smaller than a modern U.S. quarter, with a diameter of 23.5 mm. It is the lowest face value coin ever produced by the United States. All half cents were minted at the Philadephia mint.

There are several different types of half cents. The Liberty Cap, facing left was designed and engraved by Adam Eckfeldt and issued only in 1793. The Liberty Cap facing right was designed by Robert Scot and issued from 1794 to 1797.

The Draped Bust half cent was designed by Gilbert Stuart and Robert Scot. The reverse was designed by Scot-John Gardner, engraved by Robert Scot. This half cent coin was issued from 1800 to 1808. The Classic Head half cent was designed and engraved by John Reich. Issued from 1809 to 1835.

The Coronet half cent was designed by Robert Scot and Christian Gobrecht, reverse designed by John Reich and Christian Gobrecht, engraved by Christian Gobrecht). From 1840 through 1849 only proofs only issues and these pieces are rare. Production for general circulation started up again in 1849 and were minted until 1857.

The best place to purchase half cent coins is at eBay. Most of these coins are very expensive in the better grades and rare years. However, if you just want one or two for your collection look for half cents dated from 1804 to 1857 in the lower grades of about good, good or very good. You should be able to find a specimen for your collection in the $10.00 to $25.00 range.
