Antique and Vintage Grandfather Clock's

The first American clocks were 7 to 9 feet tall and called Grandfather Clocks or "tall-case" clocks. Shorter grandmother clocks were 3 to 5 feet tall. The cases of the grandfather and grandmother clocks were made tall to accommodate the weights. These weights were hung on cords or chains to turn the movement and the long pendulum that regulated timing.

The early tall-case clocks were hand crafted by master clockmakers. They made 20 or less clocks a year selling for $40.00 to $50.00 each. One of the most famous makers of tall-case clocks was Peter Stretch of Philadelphia, William Claggett of New Port, RI and Aaron Willard of Boston. Their name was always inscribed on the dial face or movement.
