Animation Art cels (short for celluloid) are the hand painted sheets that are placed over a background and photographed to make animation films and cartoons. Through the years animation studios destroyed a large majority of their cels, making those that survived extremely valuable.
A sericel (short for serigraph cel) is a non-production silk screen cel. No work is done by hand. These sericel are usually produced in limited edition just for collectors. Collectors should also consider cels from Saturday morning cartoons and animation commercials as a less expensive way to collect animation art. Cels from today's animated prime time TV shows are also very popular.
